2014: release of the PIANISSIMO
PIANISSIMO, little sister of PIANO, has followed the evolution of the semi-gun microphones tending to have a reduced electronic part (e.g. Schoeps MiniCMIT, DPA 4017C,…) or any microphone under 21cm (Sennheiser MKH50, Schoeps CMC6).
It keeps the same principle of ovoid suspended cage, with an elliptical section slightly smaller than PIANO.
Like PIANO, the PIANISSIMO cage cannot be removed, for the benefit of the lightness and quality of the cage suspension feature.
Due to its more recent design, PIANISSIMO gains in versatility compared to PIANO.
Designed in parallel with the E-OSIX suspensions, it accepts a wider variety of suspension modules than the PIANO. It also offers a wide range of MS, DMS and XY stereo combinations with many more customizable configurations than the PIANO.
Like PIANO, the ovoid cage of PIANISSIMO has a slightly elliptical cross-section, which is favourable to good acoustic behaviour (softening of residual eigenmodes) and to the reduction of wind noise during lateral movements.
In Mono version, PIANISSIMO can accommodate a large choice of E-OSIX 7,8 and 9 suspension modules with elliptical isolators (DPA4017B, Sennheiser MKH50, …) as well as adapted versions with clip on the front (MiniCMIT, DPA4017C, …). The cross-isolator modules already used in the PIANO, based on cradles 5 and 6, can also be used and are better adapted for certain microphones (CMC6, MKH8060,…).
In MS and DMS stereo, PIANISSIMO accepts a very large number of microphone combinations that are much more easily interchangeable than in the PIANO.
For reasons of anti-vibration efficiency, suspension modules with crossed isolators are preferred in MS and DMS.
This range of cradles 5,6,7,8 and 9 allows the creation of suspension modules adapted to all kinds of MS and DMS configurations (single modules + double-clip, double modules or custom-made in 3D printing).
Standard basic wiring:
For mono use of a PIANISSIMO MS or DMS, the output connector (XLR5 or XLR7) must be shared and only the splitter between the windshield and the recorder can be used to provide channel 1 (M).
In MS and DMS, the microphones are generally connected to the Binder socket(s) by separate and adapted cables (connectors, lengths and cable routing).
XLR3 male (1: ground 2,3: +/- M)
XLR5 male (1: ground 2,3: +/- M 4,5:+/- S)
XLR7 male (1: ground 2,3: +/- M 4,5:+/- S 6,7:+/- R)
Compared to the PIANO example, where the choice of single or double axis rotation is to be determined at the time of purchase, the second axis of PIANISSIMO is intrinsic but a little “hidden” for occasional use (gain in compactness).
The PIA-SW-BASE, which is used with PIANO in a single axis of rotation version, is also suitable for PIANISSIMO. Its center distance is generally sufficient for the installation of most “Plug On” transmitters.
For the use of digital transmitters, we offer an option of a cable with enhanced protection (mono version only). Just order the additional reference “RF-OPT” which is not an article in itself, but indicates a particular constitution of the cable:
Pianissimo mono cable in “RF-OPT” version, with its RED mark (shrink tubing or other).
Depending on the wind intensity and ambient noise conditions (masking effect), it is useful to have an additional fur, over the primary fabric. We offer two types of fur: Short pile (SP) and Long pile (LP). The wind efficiency increases as the protective layer becomes thicker and denser, at the expense of a naturally degrading response curve (filtering of low and high frequencies; loss of directivity in the lower frequency range).

Long hair fur : 160 g
Average size without fur: 32 cm long, maximum diameter 15/16 cm (ovoid shape).
